The Thinker and his Isolation

In a letter to Hannah Arendt on January 10, 1926 Martin Heidegger describes the dilemma between the creative and the active life, a tension which the philosopher, who was by that time at the threshold of greatness, was becoming familiar with. Heidegger, Arendt's professor at the University of Marburg in the winter semseter of 1923-24, and seventeen years her senior, had taken a liking for what would be one of his most famous students or "acolytes," in an affair as intellectually gratifying as it was morally questionable (the professor had been married for six years to Elfride Petri). In the said letter, the professor apologizes to his student for his sudden coldness and indifference to her as of late. It was only a year ago when the teacher and student began to rendezvous, repeatedly professing through correspondence their devotion to one another. And so, after explaining that his work was to blame for his recent aloofness, Martin goes on to say that

Tugon sa Isang Kaibigan tungkol kay Kierkegaard

Maraming salamat sa iyong pagbasa at mga mungkahi! Iba talaga kung may kasama ka sa pag-iisip; laging kulang ang mag-isa.

Naalala ko ang sinabi ni Virgina Woolf sa tanong mo: "Love makes you solitary." Oo nga, para bang ginagawa kang walang kaparis, natatangi at mag-isa ng pag-ibig; inilalagay sa iyong mga balikat ang buong bigat ng daigdig. Baka dahil ito sa natatangi rin ang tawag ng pag-ibig: ako, at ako lamang, ang tinawag--kaya ako lamang, at walang iba, ang maaaring tumugon. 

At gaya nga ng sabi mo, madalas hindi mauunawaan ng iba ang paraan ng pagtugon natin, dahil hindi naman sila ang tinawag. Malungkot at sabay maligaya siguro si Abraham: mag-isa siya sa daigdig, ngunit kasama niya ang Diyos. Tinanong iyan sa akin dati ng estudyante, kung masaya raw ba si Abraham. Hindi ko alam kung ano ang isasagot ko dahil tila imposible yata na maligaya lamang siya. Sabi nga ni K, hindi na naging tulad ng dati si Abraham.
